the historic old town of salzburg is one of the most beautiful to be found in europe. the salzach river winds through the center of the city as its lifeline, coming from the south from the foothills of the alps. the fortress hohensalzburg, built in 1077, is the largest fully preserved castle in central europe. salzburg's most famous son is, of course, wolfgang amadeus mozart.
